What if they had backed out of the fire? Just never set it in the first place? Or what if they all survived? Would there have been a story to tell? I guess we will never really know for sure. Can you imagine it though? It would just be a story about cousins and one of them falling in love. Now thats not a bad story, and through most of the book thats how it seems, but would you read that book again and again? Probably not. You would read it once, say "that was a pretty good book" and then never pick it up agin. Probably forget you ever read it. Thats why the fire was so important. Thats why Gat, Mirren, and Johnny dying was so crushal to the story. Was it sad? Yes. Did it change your life? I hope so. I hope that one of the most crushal and major events of theis whole novel change your life for the better. I know it changed mine. It made me see that some of the most important details are hidden in plain sight and that you will only see tham if you let go of your past and look to the future.
