We Were Liars
We Were Liars, I Was a Liar, I am a Liar.
The meaning of the title, and why it is what it is, is very important to the book. It makes you question. Why does it say were? Who is we? Why are they liars? All of these questions are in your head as soon as you see the title. You don’t even have to open the book to become interested and intrigued. That is the power of a very good title. Here are the answers to some of your questions.
Why does it say were? – It says were because the story is set in the past. Were indicates that they are not liars anymore. In the story Gat, Mirren, Johnny, Cadence were nicknamed The Lairs. At the end of the book it is revealed that Gat, Mirren, and Johnny were killed in the fire they set. Cadence, after having brain damage after the fire, does not remember the fire happening and so thinks that her friends are still alive. The last section of the book is her remembering. Remembering that her liars are now a were.
Who is we? – We is the Liars. We stands for Gat, Mirren, Johnny, and Cadence. We shows that they were a group.
What is the lie? The lie is what they were. They were originally nicknamed the liars because they got into and out of trouble a lot and always together. Later in the book though the lie is what they told themselves. The lie that they were still together. The lie that they were okay and nothing was wrong.
